This examination is available to demonstrate the position of the baby (whether breech, head down or transverse) and to determine the location of the placenta.

Your midwife will already know if your baby is breach, but it can be reassuring to see for yourself.
Note - At late gestation, the baby is too large to be clearly seen by ultrasound as only part of the baby can be seen at any one time.
The deeper portions of the baby will not be visible now, because the Ultrasound is absorbed by the calcified bones.
The position of the placenta will have been identified previously, but if low lying (close to the birth canal) then a scan can be performed again to check the position of its lower reaches.
In most Pregnancy ultrasound examinations, the scan will show the developing baby and will reassure you that all is well. It is an unfortunate fact, however, that sometimes pregnancy complications arise resulting in a failiure of the pregnancy. This can be completely unexpected and without warning and requires us to be the bearers of the worst kind of bad news. In such circumstances, we will ensure you have time and support to process the information and to receive whatever medical care is required.
